Paul Gallant Memorial Ice Fishing Tourament

On Saturday, February 18, in near perfect conditions, the third installment of the Paul Gallant Memorial ice fishing tournament was held on French Lake. The turnout for this yearly event was excellent, with 120 adults and 43 youth being registered. Many well wishers and visitors also stopped by during the day. A large army tent full of volunteers, serving refreshments, greeted participants as they made their way onto 12-14 inches of "good" ice. The basic equipment needed includes warm clothes, an auger, a rod and some bait. The actual equipment used by some is as varied as the different modes of transportation that were also used. As the tournament wound down, contestants raced to register their catch. Everyone gathered around and winners were announced for both adults and youth in two species categories, pickerel and perch. This is a well organized family event that both novice and seasoned fishermen will enjoy. For those who don't know, Wendy and I have four grand-children and four dogs. When the kids are visiting overnight a bath is always on the schedule. Some love it...others not so much....same goes for the puppies...... Who do you think dislikes it the most

Winter Fun

Winter can be a fun time of the year to stay active and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. I think that every town in New Brunswick has an outdoor rink or a pond that the local kids keep clean, and every town has a favorite sliding hill. There is always snowmobiling, snowshoeing. cross-country skiing, and ice fishing. Of course, nothing says winter fun like making snow angels. The low angle of the sun provides lots of shadow shots and many opportunities for great scenery shots. The only drawback to winter is the shoveling but with the right attitude and a little patience even that can be enjoyable. Get out and experience winter for yourself...it probably will be fun.

Behind the scenes

Today, I would like to acknowledge some behind the scenes work that make this blog possible. My wife Wendy is along for the majority of my photo expeditions. She provides encouragement and good company. Often, she is a reluctant accomplice to some of my crazy ideas. She may be called upon to hold up dead things while I photograph them, or she may patiently wait while I comb the beaches in search of another arrow head. She may have to pose in a field of wild flowers or walk on roads too soft and muddy for a vehicle.While you may see the glossy version on the blog, not all our excursions go exactly as planned, sometimes we get dirty and sometimes we get caught in a downpour...... She never dreamed that she would be teaching others to fish or even remotely thought that she might be a crack shot with a gun. Probably the biggest transition was the realization that camouflage and hunter orange would be a fashion mainstay in her closet. Through it all (nearly 25 years) Wendy continues to smile and humour me and my picture taking addiction. So now when you view my blog, I hope you have a better idea of exactly what goes on behind the scenes.

Wendy and I went for a drive to Maquapit lake on Sunday. Here are some pictures from a hobby farm, near the causeway. Love the goat......I baaaaaaaab and then she baaaaaaad. We sat for about 15 minutes enjoying the sights and sounds. As we drove to the Keyhole, I spotted this beautiful blueberry field, ready for winter, and had to stop for a pic. Finally when we got home there was a smartly camouflaged partridge in the backyard.

Inspiration

First let me apologise to my followers and readers. Its been nearly three weeks since my last post when Wendy was ill. I followed up her pneumonia with a bout of my own. While I am not 100%, I am anxious for a return to normalcy While I am a photographer at heart and have no problem finding inspiration for my pictures, it is the great comments and mounting page view numbers that keep me working of this blog. My inspiration comes easy as I see beauty in everything..... from the view of the leaves changing in my backyard, to the fallen leaves on my driveway. Inspiration can be as varied as a ripe blackberry cane or a stunning sunset. It may take the form of a creeping vine on an abandoned church or a view of a farmers field. I may be inspired by a colorful reflection, a single flower, a truly New Brunswick autumn view or simply a unique location. I find it very fulfilling to know that other people may also find some inspiration in my photos, so again I would like to say a big thank you to all my my readers.....enjoy

A Walk on Water

One night two weeks ago, while she was recovering from pneumonia, Wendy felt like getting out to " get some air ". We drove to the northside entrance to the Fredericton walking bridge and got on the beautifully maintained walking trail. We crossed the St. John River and walked along the river past Chris Church Cathedral, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and up to the New Brunswick Legislative building. As dusk was approaching we started our return.

Fall is in the air, you can smell it here in the Maritimes, As the leaves change color and fall to the forest floor they begin to decay and emit an aroma that arouses memories of years gone by. While much of nature is winding down in its yearly growth cycle, and many of our non-resident birds have already left for greener pastures, I can still find many great photo opportunities. I love the pic of the bird, his shadow, and his reflection. I took a similar picture of him last year in almost the same location.

Tubing the Nashwaak

Saturday, Wendy and I went with a group to " tube " the Nashwaak River. We met everyone at the new fire hall in Durham Bridge and drove the four kilometers up Hwy 628 to Taymouth Ventures & Tubing http://www.taymouthventures.com/. We were greeted by friendly staff and quickly made our arrangements. For some it was cooler tubes and for others it was an upgrade to the luxury tubes. We decided on the 3 1/2 hours float and the owner Marty Stewart drove us and our tubes upriver to a secluded starting point. The river looked beautiful, gently flowing by and we were informed that the water temperature was 72 Fahrenheit. To my brain, 72 sounded fairly warm but my butt came to the reliasation that 72 is in fact quite chilly. After 5 minutes in the water, the temperature was the farthest thing from my mind as I was mesmerized by the beautiful scenery. We stopped several times to regroup and lounge on the banks and it was nearly 5 hours later that we were climbing the stairs to finish our run. Everyone had a great time and I would highly recommend this activity for both family fun and great value.

These are some random shots from the past two weeks, The first picture is a cut (hole left behind by strip mining). Once they have removed all the coal the water pumps are turned off and the "cut" fills with spring water. Not all are this color, but there are many examples of this around Minto. I have posted pictures of this old Dodge before, but I was out for a walk in the woods and could not walk by without snapping a few shots. How long it sat before I found it is anyone"s guess, but I have been visiting this truck for more than 35 years. I had to post the funny pics of the baby budgies. The mother hen had 6 eggs and 4 have hatched, all a few days apart. Perhaps, this is where the term " spread eagled " comes from.

Kayaking the Causeway

Wendy and I couldn't refuse an offer to help our cousins Todd and Tanya break in their new kayaks. We even knew the perfect place to go, the causeway right behind our house. The causeway is the point where Newcastle stream meets Grand Lake. Normally the current in the river makes it to difficult to go upstream but the unusually high water level of Grand Lake this year makes it a lazy kayakers paradise.

Wendy and I went picking blueberries this week The wild blueberry crop is very poor this year. Our favourite location was sprayed with pesticide by IRVING, killing all the berry plants and everything else except the trees that they want. We saw the turkey while out for a drive on the Post Rd to Chipman. I never really thought of them as complimentary products before but .....

Covered Bridge

This past weekend Wendy and I visited the Oldfield covered bridge. It is located in Newtown, on Hwy 890 between Sussex and Petitcodiac. This bridge was constructed in 1910 and spans 98' across Smith Creek. There are still approximately 70 covered bridges left in New Brunswick. Campobello Island + SkyWatch Friday #3 x 2

This past weekend, Wendy and I decided to try something a little different for us, tenting. After careful consideration, we chose Campobello Island, and more specifically Herring Cove Provincial Park, as our destination. For those unfamiliar with Campobello, it is accessible from the New Brunswick mainland only by ferry. First a twenty minute ferry ride with beautiful views from Letete to Deer Island and after a short drive another ferry ride through swirling tidal waters to Campobello. We arrived at our Herring Cove campsite to a wonderfully sandy beach, empty of any other persons, After setting up our tent and cooking supper on the coleman stove, we went beach combing.We found driftwood, seashells, wave polished stones and many pieces of highly prized ocean glass. We ended the night watching the sunset over Eastport, Maine(this pic is entry #1 into skywatch friday http://skyley.blogspot.com/). On Saturday we drove from one end of the island to the other, visiting all the wharfs, beaches and lighthouses and seeing plenty of birds, fish and other sea life. My favourite picture of the whole weekend is of the old fishing boats, rotting on the shore. These onetime icons of family livelihood have been replaced by the larger draggers, forever changing life for the 800 or so full-time residents of the tiny island. The highlight of the trip for Wendy was watching all the harbor seals playing in front of the lighthouse near a short bridge to the United States. We did not realize the US was so close, although I'm sure area residents are grateful as there is no bank, no gas stations, and limited medical services available on the island. We met the young man on the bicycle at our campground. He was from Montreal and had been riding through the US now for about 2 weeks. I thought it was so funny that he had as much stuff packed on his bike as I had stuffed in my car. Saturday evening we returned to the same spot to again watch the sunset over Eastport (this pic is entry #2 into skywatch friday). Finally, Wendy snapped this pic of me Sunday morning doing some last minute beach combing while waiting for the ferry. We'll be back!

Make a day of it

Wendy and I love hanging out with friends and no one plays harder than our friends Dave & Heidi at North Cedars Photography. The first group of photos shows our outing to the thuroughfare at the twin bridges at French Lake. We paddled for a few hours, chasing a family of King Fishers, while avoiding gelatinous globs of an unknown substance and stopped and enjoyed a picnic lunch, before making the return trip. The second group of photos shows the cove on Grand Lake which Dave and Heidi's residence overlooks. It is a great place to go swimming, boating, fishing, or to just relax by the fire and enjoy the sunset. The Buck

Wow, another great week. First, I found a very cooperative dragonfly. He sat patiently on the trunk of the car while I switched to macro and tried different angles. The next morning I woke to see a beautiful doe browsing through my backyard. One evening through the week, Wendy and I went beachcombing at Indian Point and witnessed four deer playing like children in a field. Finally, on the drive home, it made my day to see a healthy four point buck with his antlers all in velvet

Fishing the Keyhole

The Keyhole Lake is a great place to go pickerel fishing. Even on a windy day you can find a calm cove and New Brunswick pickerel are all about calm water and lots of weeds. Pickerel are aggressive predators and usually swallow their prey whole, so you always know when you are getting a bite. A steel leader is a must for this fish as they have several rows of razor sharp teeth that will shred even the toughest line. It is also a good idea to use pliers to remove the hooks. Personally, I am a catch and release guy, but these fish are good eating. As the day ended, the osprey was glad that I was done sharing his fishing spot and even the sun seemed to be celebrating a great day with one last hurrah.

Midland Falls

Wendy and I visited the Midland Falls on Sunday. This is a very beautiful spot, but the road in is not made for cars. Still, it only takes a few minutes of walking. The water for the falls is supplied by a spring fed pond. While there are no fish here, some turtles call it home.

This year, our spring and summer seems to have been delayed by several weeks. I don't recall seeing the gaspereau (Alewife) ever running this late. I also found parts of turtle eggs, from a recent hatching, on the shore. This deer doesn't seem to mind the funny weather, but was put off by my arrival.

Latest Birds

These are my latest bird photos and one of a lonely porcupine. The yellow-rumped warbler has been eating flies from my second story window for about a week. He taps lightly on the window each time and now even the dogs aren't paying attention to him. The osprey seemed very upset with the crow, but could not catch him, as the crow deftly avoided the osprey with quick, last second moves. As kids, we had fun calling each other a yellow-bellied sapsucker, but here is a pic of the real thing. The great blue heron figured out a way to get an easy meal. The last two pics are of a little bird living in my yard. He is very adept at catching flys and moths, and seems to use his tail as a counter-weight when sitting. If anyone recognizes this little guy, I would appreciate identification.

Arrowhead

Some people were asking about the Arrowhead on my intro page. I found it two summers ago at Princess Park. Wendy and I were walking on the beach and it was laying right at my feet. It was only five meters from the road and less than that from the Keyhole brook Here are a few additional pics of the two faces and

the edge. Based on the shape, I think it is between 3000 and 11000 years old. Corrections are welcomed

A week of firsts

This truly was a week of firsts. Thursday was the first time I saw a fawn suckling on its mother (sorry for the poor quality, but this photo was at the extreme end of my effective zoom). Later Thursday was the first time I was almost blown away by the wind, when a Kansas style storm blew through and finally on the weekend I got my first picture of the snowball clearwing hummingbird moth ( the butterflies are just a bonus). I have been seeing this moth in my lilacs every year since 1995

Birds offer many good photo opportunities in New Brunswick. In particular, around the Minto/Grand Lake area we are lucky to have both mature and new growth forest, many lakes and rivers and of course we have the Grand Lake Meadows www.grandlakemeadows.com. Pictured below are loons, canadian geese, great blue herons, a downy woodpecker, an osprey, a pair of northern flickers, a seagull, a turkey, a ruffed grouse, a barred owl, an unidentified bird (need help on this one), a semipalated sandpiper, a carolina chickadee, and an american goldfinch. Please offer corrections on any I have wrongly identified.

Pileated Perspective

If you've never seen the pileated woodpecker, the pictures, without some perspective, do little to convey their size. Adults can get up to 18" tall with a wingspan of nearly 30". This year round resident of New Brunswick eats by drilling into the heartwood of dead trees looking for beetle larva. They also consume ants and berries. Like most woodpeckers, the pileated has four toes on each foot, two facing forward and two backward. While we may not get to see them very often, we hear them, as their call, which sounds like laughing, is loud and very recognizable. Pictured at right is the male and below the female.... can you spot the main difference?

This time of the year is especially hard for me as I am not able to get out into the woods as much as I would like. There is still too much snow for boots but not consistent enough levels for skis and snowshoes, that makes it the perfect time to go for a drive. Every year at the end of March, as the days get warmer and the snow starts to disappear from the farm fields, the deer emerge from their wintering grounds looking for the first new growth of spring. The geese are also returning. Wendy and I like to drive to Douglas Harbour then down to Scotchtown, around to Clarks Corner, out to Ripples and back home to Minto. Usually we can see upwards of several hundred deer. While there are deer around in the afternoon, late evening is the best viewing time. There are rumors of a partially albino deer near the government garage in Lakeville Corner but he has eluded me..... A common theme as anyone who knows my track record hunting deer will attest to.
